Cyclones can’t hold lead, lose 5-2 to Sooners

The ISU Cyclone hockey team had a 2-1 lead into the third, but four unanswered goals by Oklahoma powered the Sooners past the Cyclones 5-2 in Oklahoma City.

The Cyclones (9-10-0) got on the board first when Marcus Malmsten gathered a loose puck behind the net and backhanded the puck past the Sooner goaltender. The Cyclones had chances in the first, including a 5-on-3 power play, but failed to convert.

The teams each netted a goal in the second. The Sooners (15-7-1) scored more than four minutes into the middle period. Then, with four minutes left to play in the second, the Cyclones took the lead. ISU freshman James Werner continued his hot streak when he fired a shot top shelf to give the Cyclones the lead heading into the third.

However, Oklahoma would come out and dominate the third period.  Midway through the third, the Sooners scored twice within an 11-second span to take the lead. OU padded their lead with two minutes left and scored an empty-netter to finish the scoring and drop the Cyclones under .500 once again.

Iowa State will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow night as the Cyclones face the University of Central Oklahoma in Oklahoma City at 7:30 p.m.
