GRIDIRON: Picks

Editor’s note: This is week eight of the Daily’s season-long Gridiron challenge. Each week, the Iowa State Daily’s three football reporters and the sports desk columnist will choose the winner from seven college football games around the country and provide commentary on each game.

Jake Lovett, sports editor — 32-17

Chris Cuellar, sports writer — 30-19

Jeremiah Davis, sports columnist — 29-20

David Merrill, sports writer — 26-23

Iowa State @ No. 22 Texas

JakeTexas — It’s getting harder to convince anyone that Texas is on a down year.

ChrisTexas — Remember when I said Garrett Gilbert was the new Chris Simms? Simms still beat Iowa State.

JeremiahTexas — I thought after the Texas Tech game that Iowa State might have a shot against Texas. Needless to say, that thought is gone.

DavidTexas — This is the last bruising Iowa State has to take before hosting Kansas for Homecoming.

No. 8 Michigan State @ Northwestern

JakeNorthwestern — Northwestern always knocks off a highly ranked Big Ten team. Knocking off top Big Ten teams is about as impressive as bowling a 60.

ChrisNorthwestern — Did you really think Sparty would run away with the Big Ten? Dan Persa is a one-man upset special.

JeremiahMichigan State — MSU fans better hope they don’t look past this sneaky Northwestern team to the Iowa game on Oct. 30.

DavidMichigan State — I kind of wanted to pick Northwestern here, but Michigan State is just too strong this year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the boys in purple make it close.

No. 6 LSU @ No. 5 Auburn

JakeLSU — Say what you will about Les Miles’ time management, but the man is 6-0. Last I checked, that’s real good.

ChrisAuburn — Giving Les Miles and Gene Chizik first place in the SEC would be like giving a monkey the keys to an amusement park.

JeremiahLSU — This was like pulling teeth. Auburn is shocking everyone, but Les Miles continues to succeed despite himself.

DavidAuburn — For some reason, I still think LSU is overrated. Say what you want about Chizik, but he has a heck of a quarterback that will make the difference in this ball game.

No. 10 Wisconsin @ No. 13 Iowa

JakeIowa — Iowa is on top in the Big Ten. Being on top in the Big Ten is like being a dwarf among midgets.

ChrisIowa — Who wants to see a 3-0 game in the fourth quarter with Ferentz and Bielema smiling? Moving on.

JeremiahIowa — Two weeks in a row I’ve picked the Hawkeyes. And it’s two weeks in a row I’ve felt sick to my stomach.

DavidIowa — Wisconsin was impressive in knocking off Ohio State, but I can’t see the Hawkeyes losing this one at home.

No. 14 Nebraska @ No. 17 Oklahoma State

JakeOklahoma State — These teams are nearly identical. They score a lot. They gain a lot of yards. They’ll both end up with three losses.

ChrisNebraska — Oklahoma State’s offense would score 100 on their defense. T-Mart gets his magic back in Stillwater.

JeremiahNebraska — Combined points in this game could reach 150. Nebraska wins only if Zach Lee remains on the sidelines.

DavidNebraska — Oklahoma State is a really tough team and is an even tougher team at home. Kendall Hunter is a really good running back. Oh well.

Western Kentucky @ Louisiana-Lafayette

JakeLouisianaLafayette — They are both ragin’ and Cajun! What more could anyone want!?

ChrisWestern Kentucky — I just learned Romeo Crennel was a Hilltopper, same week I found out WKU has lost 18 straight. The streak ends in Lafayette!

JeremiahWestern Kentucky — Eeny, meeny, miney, Western Kentucky!

DavidLouisiana-Lafayette — Anybody watch the History Channel? They hunt gators in Louisiana — down at home on the bayou.

No. 3 Oklahoma @ No. 18 Missouri

JakeOklahoma — An all-star team compiled from Missouri’s first six opponents would lose to Oklahoma by 20.

ChrisOklahoma — Missouri is the lowest ranked undefeated team in the country. We’ll see why Saturday.

JeremiahOklahoma — The last hurdle on the way to what’s probably going to be a national title berth.

DavidOklahoma — Did I see correctly that Missouri was No.11 in the BCS poll in the most recent listing? There’s one reason to never fully trust a computer.
