Tennis swept twice over weekend

The ISU tennis team went to Oklahoma this weekend hoping to end a long losing streak.

Scheduled to take on Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, the Cyclones faced two opponents with records hovering around the .500 mark. If they were able to come away with a victory in either meet, it would be the first conference win for Iowa State since they defeated Kansas, 6-1, on March 1, 2003. Since defeating the Jayhawks, the Cyclones have played in 60 conference matches and lost every single one.

Friday’s and Sunday’s matches provided an opportunity for the Cyclones to end the losing streak. Oklahoma State only fielded a roster of five healthy players. Yet it didn’t seem to matter, as Iowa State was swept in both meets by a score of 7-0, dropping their season record to 4-10, 0-7 in the Big 12.

Oklahoma was first on the docket for Iowa State. In the Friday night meet, the Cyclones were able to stay competitive with the Sooners throughout the doubles matches. Despite keeping each of the matches close, Oklahoma eventually won all three doubles events.

In the singles matches, Iowa State refused to go down in defeat quietly. Three Cyclones were able to take their match into the third set, but none were able to secure a victory. Although the team fought hard, they were defeated, in the end, by a score of 7-0. With the win, Oklahoma improved their overall record to 9-7, 2-3 in the Big 12.

After making the 90-minute commute north to Stillwater, Okla., the Cyclones were set to take on the reigning Big 12 runner-up. Oklahoma State has had its struggles this year, competing with a team fighting injuries.

In the double’s matches, the Cyclone pairing of Liza Wischer and Alyssa Palen were able to defeat Oklahoma State’s Maryna Tkachenko and Jessica Collins, 8-5. The victory was notable as it was the first on the season for the Wischer-Palen duo. Iowa State was nearly able to win the double’s point, but the team of Erin Karonis and Chrissy Derouin fell just short of beating Jo-Anne Karaitiana and Sasha Belova, 9-7. Oklahoma State’s team of Iryna Tkachenko and Yawna Allen also defeated Kara Hickey and Caitlin Loprinzi, 8-2.

After exerting all of their energy in doubles play, the Cyclones were unable to make the singles matches very competitive. The six straight set losses caused the final score to once again be 7-0. By securing the victory, Oklahoma State was able to raise their record to one win above the .500 mark at 8-7, 2-0 Big 12.
