Soccer coach Rebecca Hornbacher announced Monday that she would step down after six seasons as ISU head coach.

Hornbacher and players were not made available for comment, but Hornbacher said in a press release she was ready to “begin a new chapter of my life.”

“I am getting married this spring, so it’s an appropriate time to make a lifestyle change and turn the page on my personal story,” Hornbacher said in the release. “I will be moving to Omaha to be closer to my family and to start my future with my fiance.”

The Cyclones went 8-6-5 in 2007 and went to the Big 12 Conference postseason tournament, where they lost to second-ranked Texas A&M in a shootout. The season included wins over nationally ranked Oklahoma State and Missouri and a 1-1 draw against the No. 3 Texas Longhorns.

Hornbacher is the winningest coach in ISU history, compiling 45 wins in six seasons and taking the team to their only NCAA Tournament in 2005.

“We are extremely grateful for Rebecca’s dedication and loyalty to both the school and her student athletes . she was instrumental in giving ISU an identity on the collegiate soccer landscape,” said senior associate athletic director Calli Sanders said in the release.

Hornbacher said she wanted to continue working with youth in Omaha.

“I’m so very grateful for the support that I’ve received from Iowa State University staff and the opportunity they gave me to continue leading the Cyclone soccer program,” she said. “I would like to continue working with young people and hopefully can do so in the Omaha area.”

Associate head coach Scott Ebke was named interim head coach.
