Before the men’s basketball or wrestling teams took the stage at Hilton Coliseum this weekend, the ISU swimming and diving team clinched the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series.

Iowa State had a slim 104-103 lead with five events remaining in the meet. The Cyclones won three of those to win, 152-148.

Freshman Jenny Vondenkamp had the biggest win of her career in the 500-meter freestyle, with a time of 5 minutes, 2.85 seconds, to start off the run for the Cyclones.

Abby Glaser also won the 100-meter flystroke in 56.80 seconds, and Kali Fryklund won the 3-meter diving event to help Iowa State hold on to the lead late in the meet.

“I really couldn’t be more excited for our team,” said diving coach Jeff Warrick in a press release. “It was really exciting and they pushed us down to the wire like we knew they would, but our team kept fighting and did a great job.”

Warrick was also pleased that the team could take home the Cy-Hawk trophy.

“It is great that we won [the Cy-Hawk series],” he said. “The last thing you want to do is prolong the series, so it is really great for our program and Iowa State in general.”

Other victories for the Cyclones included the 200-yard medley relay, Lindsay Wegner in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke, Jeli Nixt in the 100-yard breaststroke, Tien Tran in the 1-meter diving competition and Marni Benson in the 200-yard breaststroke.

The Cyclones will take the rest of the semester and the holiday break off from competition and will next host St. Olaf on Jan. 18, 2008.
