Soccer splits invite games

After getting off to their best start in school history with a win on Friday, the ISU soccer team couldn’t keep its momentum in a 2-1 loss to Dayton on Sunday.

Dayton’s Mandi Back scored the game-winning goal in the 107th minute to break a 1-1 tie, her second goal of the game.

Iowa State (3-1-1) took an early 1-0 lead with Brittanie Waddell’s first goal of the season at the 1:50 mark, but Iowa State’s offense was blanked the rest of the way.

“We have to be able to put it away when we have opportunities,” coach Rebecca Hornbacher said in a press release.

“Both teams battled, but unfortunately, we just fell short late in the game.”

Goalkeeper Ann Gleason made eight saves, seven of them coming in the second half and overtime.

The Cyclones beat Montana on Friday to start the invitational. Leslie Hill’s goal at the 62-minute mark was all Iowa State would need to hold on for a 1-0 win and get off to the best record in school history.

Iowa State’s 3-0-1 start before losing Sunday replaced the 3-1-0 start to the 2002 season in which the Cyclones won their first three games before falling in the fourth.

Gleason made six saves against Montana, as Iowa State had gone 298 minutes without allowing a goal before Dayton got on the board Sunday.

Iowa State will next make a trip to Las Vegas to participate in the UNLV Rebel Classic this weekend. The Cyclones will play Nevada at 1 p.m. Friday and will play UNLV at 1 p.m. Sunday.
