Saving the upset

Iowa kick returner Derrell Johnson-Koulianos put a scare into the Cyclone crowd when he returned the final kickoff for 65 yards.

Michael Bibbs, a reserve linebacker, waited back as a safety valve for the kick return defense and before making the tackle at the ISU 25-yard line.

“I had a feeling that something like that was going to happen,” Bibbs said. “So I just stayed back with the kicker and made the tackle. I knew somebody had to get the tackle, and I figured he would get to my level.”

Fans rushed the field, and the Cyclone sideline ran to get the Cy-Hawk trophy. Meanwhile, Bibbs was still on the field.

“When I got up, I got pushed right back down,” Bibbs said.

Originally from Atlanta, the 6-foot-2-inch, 225-pound junior switched from wide receiver to strong safety when he attended Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Recruited by director of football operations Barney Farrar, Bibbs is rooming with senior linebacker Alvin Bowen.

Bowen was one of the first off the sideline to get the trophy.

“I really didn’t know who tackled [Johnson-Koulianos] until [seeing] film, and Bibbs told me the whole way home,” Bowen said. “I was just saying someone get him down, and luckily enough my roommate, of course, my little bro, Bibbs, came in and made the play.”
