Lacrosse club splits weekend matches

The ISU men’s lacrosse club continued its Upper Midwest Division A play on the road in Mankato, Minn., where it faced Marquette University (2-2) and Minnesota State University-Mankato (0-5).

The weekend resulted in a win and a loss for the Cyclones (2-3), losing to Marquette on Saturday, and beating Minnesota State on Sunday afternoon.

Saturday’s rainy weather and poor field conditions had a huge impact on the Cyclones’ game against Marquette.

“The rain made for a really sloppy field, which led to our team playing really sloppy and unsettled,” said attack Jesse Nagan.

Iowa State scored first, with a goal from attack David Woodcock, to take an early lead. Marquette answered back shortly after, to go into the half with two goals ahead of the Cyclones, at 3-1.

“We really had a tough time clearing the ball out of the defensive end, which gave them all the scoring opportunities and goals,” Woodcock said.

The Cyclones were able to slowly shut down Marquette, allowing them only one goal in the second half. The late dominance was not enough and even with a goal from attack Brian Van Heck, Iowa State lost 4-2.

“Most of the goals [Marquette] scored were really scrappy,” said midfielder captain Jacob Oakland. “They were just getting all the right bounces, and we weren’t.”

Sunday was much more in the Cyclones’ favor, as they came out much stronger against Minnesota State, winning the ground balls and passing the ball much more quickly down the field.

“Sunday, we definitely dominated all aspects of the game,” Oakland said.

The Cyclones came out strong, scoring early in the game and ending the first half ahead of Minnesota State, 6-2.

“After Saturday’s game, we knew we had to step it up,” Nagan said. “We just came out to win.”

Oakland agreed in his teams powerful dominance on Sunday.

“The midfield and attack really started to come together,” Oakland said. “They were able to find each other on the cuts and work the ball down the field.”

The Cyclones continued working the ball down the field for more scoring opportunities and ended their seven-year regular season losing streak to Minnesota State by beating them 10-4.

“We’re really starting to get better, and we’re really starting to look and work more like a team,” said Woodcock, who scored four goals in the game against Minnesota State.
