WRESTLING: Former Cyclones clash at Nationals

Former ISU NCAA champion Nate Gallick beat a Hawkeye Saturday night in Las Vegas at the U.S. Senior National Championships, but he had to go through a Cyclone to get to the finals.

Gallick beat Iowa assistant Mike Zadick for a third straight time (0-1, 3-0, 2-0) to claim the 60-kg. title (132 lbs.). With the win, he earned an exemption from the World Team Trials and will face the winner of the tournament for a spot on the national team.

To get to the finals, Gallick beat former Cyclone teammate Zach Roberson in a close, 0-1, 1-0, 1-0 semifinal battle. As the second and fourth seeds, the two were supposed to be seeded on opposite sides of the bracket, but a withdrawal from the tournament put the two on a collision course. Roberson went on to finish fourth.

Iowa State was well-represented in the tournament. Former Cyclone wrestlers Chris Bono (66 kg./145.5 lbs.) and Joe Heskett (74 kg./163 lbs.) won their respective titles.

Recent Cyclone graduate Kurt Backes (96 kg./211.5 lbs.) lost his first match in the championship bracket but came back to take fifth place.

Current ISU assistant Grant Nakamura (55 kg./121 lbs.) placed seventh. Current Cyclone Jake Varner (84 kg./185 lbs) and recent graduate Trent Paulson (74 kg.) each qualified for the championship bracket but finished eighth.
