ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: Tennis visits East Coast

There is no rest for the weary.

The ISU tennis team heads east this spring break to take on three teams from North and South Carolina. The Cyclones (4-4, 0-4), are undefeated in nonconference matches this season and hopes to continue that streak over Spring Break.

Iowa State’s tour of the East Coast begins next Tuesday with a visit to UNC-Wilmington. The Seahawks (10-4) are enjoying a successful season with their latest match a 5-2 victory at the University of Dayton.

The Cyclones then travel south to Conway, S.C. on Thursday to challenge Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers (8-2) are coming off a 4-3 loss to Charlotte, only their second dropped match of the season.

Iowa State wraps up their away matches when they take on Southern Conference representative Elon. The Phoenix (6-5) lost their last match in a 4-3 heartbreaker at Longwood.

Spring Break trips have become the norm for Iowa State. Last year the team was fortunate enough to go to Hawaii to play several matches, which makes this year’s trip pale in comparison to last year’s.

“It’s tough to beat Hawaii,” said sophomore Kara Hickey. “No, it should be fun. I don’t think many people on the team have been there [North Carolina]. It should be a neat experience, seeing new places for all of us.”

All three teams Iowa State faces this weekend have winning records, but play in smaller conferences that don’t have the pedigree of the Big 12.

“They’re good teams but they’re no powerhouses like Texas and all those teams that we usually play,” Hickey said. “But they’re going to be good, you could compare them to Drake.”

The Cyclones hosted Kansas (3-8, 1-2) last Saturday, dropping the match 6-1. The match against Kansas State on Friday was canceled because of severe winter storms and has yet to be rescheduled. Kansas brought only six players to the match and was forced to default the No. 6 position when an injury occurred during doubles play.

“We were very competitive in doubles,” said junior Caitlin Loprinzi. “That was really good to see. We got off to a really strong start and that’s the first thing we do. That got us all fired up. In singles, they were pretty tough; we lost all five singles matches we played.”

The ISU team hopes to gather some wins this weekend before jumping back into the tough Big 12 conference matches. The Cyclones plan to use this weekend as a momentum builder before returning home to host Nebraska.
