GSB decides funding of student organizations

The Government of the Student Body held one of its most important meetings of the year Wednesday, where it discussed how more than $1.2 million will be allocated.

The weekly meeting was held in an unfamiliar place – the Sun Room in the Memorial Union – to accommodate all of the extra people who turned up from the various student groups.

A total of 17 organizations were pulled from the original bill for the budget recommendations, making for 17 separate bills. The original bill containing the remaining groups was passed by a vote of 30-0-0.

The 17 groups pulled from the original bill were Developed, Ames Science Fiction and Fantasy Association, Organization of Latino Students, Student Organic Farm, Latinoamericanos, South Sudanese Student Association, Indian Students’ Association, International Student Council, Latino Heritage Month Committee, Argentinean-Uruguayan-Chilenean Students Association, Mexican-American Young Achievers Society, Cosplay x Conflagration, Writer’s Bloc, Taiwanese Student Association, Ethos Magazine, Hong Kong Student Association and the Government of the Student Body.

After a short recess, when most of the group representatives left that were not pulled, the pulled groups were discussed individually.

Senator Mitchell Hayek, senior in public service and administration in agriculture, pulled the organization Developed because he had concerns that the group was a pre-professional organization, which GSB does not fund with regular allocations.

Senator Brian Phillips, junior in political science, read the definitions of what qualified as a pre-professional organization and asked if any fit the group. The representatives said none described their group and the bill was passed.

Both the Ames Science Fiction and Fantasy Association and the South Sudanese Student Association were voted back to the finance committee to make line item changes that the groups requested, because the senate cannot make any changes to the actual numbers of the budgets.

The Indian Students’ Association was also passed after it was explained that the food items being funded were only from one event, since GSB only funds one food event.

Organization of Latino Students, Latinoamericanos, Latino Heritage Month Committee, Argentinean-Uruguayan-Chilean Students Assocation and Mexican-American Young Achievers Society were all pulled by Senator Zaal Tonia, senior in physics and Daily cartoonist, because he was concerned the groups were too closely related to be funded separately.

A representative from Latinoamericanos spoke on behalf of the Organization of Latino Students and Latinoamericanos, explaining the differences among the groups. After each group was explained, Latinoamericanos’ and the Organization of Latino Students’ budgets were approved.
