Soccer team closes season

There are no postseason hopes left for the ISU women’s soccer team. In its last game of the season, there is only the intrinsic value of competition.

The Cyclones (6-13-0, 2-6-0 Big 12) play Missouri Friday night with only pride and the wishes of two seniors riding on the match. Iowa State has already been eliminated from Big 12 Tournament qualification.

Kick-off against the Tigers (9-9-0, 1-8-0) is set for 7 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex.

“I hope to redeem ourselves as a team because lately we haven’t been playing the best as a team,” said Jess Villhauer, who along with fellow senior Kate Kirwan will finish in the ISU record book’s top 10 for games played. “My hope is that it all comes together, and we all end on a good note.

“It’d be kind of nice not to lose for the last game of my career.”

The Cyclones have lost five straight games in the past three weeks.

“I hope we just go out there and actually have fun,” said Kirwan, a team captain and four-year starter.

“If we go out there and have fun, then all of the goals will come.”

Iowa State is trying to avoid its worst Big 12 season since the program’s inception in 1995. That team went 0-9-0 in the conference.

The Cyclones have had several close losses this season, including an overtime loss to a ranked Oklahoma State team and a narrow loss to Colorado, but even after a double-overtime win over Nebraska to open the Big 12 season, the team was unable to generate momentum.

Coach Rebecca Hornbacher is confident that her team will play hard despite the situation.

“I know it’s been disappointing, but I really believe in my team and I know they are going to go out and they are going to work hard to get a win,” Hornbacher said.

Kirwan and Villhauer want to play. Junior forward Erin Witte said she also wants to be on the soccer field Friday night.

“It hurts, because we know that it’s not worth anything, but at the same time it is. It’s worth, you know, our pride, our dignity,” Witte said.

“We want to come out and beat Missouri because they are below us [in the standings]. And I mean we are going to play this game like any other game in the season.”
