Because of a reporting error, the Nov. 18 article “ISPIRG not funded” mischaracterized statements made by David Tillinghast, Liberal Arts and Sciences senator of the Government of the Student Body. The article implied Tillinghast had voted against the funding of Iowa Student Public Interest Research Group, when in fact he had voted for it. Tillinghast said he was upset that other senators assumed he had voted against PIRG and harassed him because of it. The Daily regrets this error.

Because of an editing error, the Nov. 18 article “GSB approves PIRG organizer” had an inaccurate headline. The Government of the Student Body did not approve any funding for Iowa Student Public Interest Research Group at its Wednesday meeting. The Daily regrets this error.

The Government of the Student Body may still consider funding for the Iowa Student Public Interest Research Group, but the vote will be saved for another meeting.

Although GSB approved a bill late Wednesday to make ISPIRG a student-funded office of GSB, it denied the group funding by a vote of 22-11-1, leaving the group three votes short of the needed two-thirds majority to pass the bill.

Members of ISPIRG and senators who voted for funding of ISPIRG spoke with senators who voted against it, hoping to get a revote to change the outcome.

Choking back tears, Lepley reminded the senate during closing announcements that reconsidering the funding of ISPIRG and voting again could change the decision in favor of the group’s funding.

There was a motion to reconsider the vote, but the senate decided to save the motion for reconsideration until a time when emotions were not running so high.

David Tillinghast, LAS senator and a Daily correspondent, said he didn’t appreciate being approached and harassed for the way he voted.

A number of senators and ISPIRG members and supporters apologized anything that was interpreted as harassment.

Lepley said without funding, ISPIRG will not be recognized as a chapter.

“We do not have a student PIRG chapter as it stands,” she said.

Lepley said she knew the decision to decline funding was possible but had hoped the senate would give students the possibility to have a PIRG chapter on campus.

“There are no hard feelings toward senate from PIRG,” Lepley said.

Although the group was not funded, it did achieve its goal of becoming a student-funded office of GSB in a 27-5-2 vote, which will put it under different regulations than other groups and give it priority in the allocation process.

Lepley said becoming a student-funded office was helpful to ISPIRG’s continued service to Iowa State.

Many senators liked the bill and said ISPIRG needs to have a close partnership with GSB to accomplish many things.

“You can’t expect them to do good work if you don’t give them the mechanism to do that,” said Speaker of the Senate Henry Alliger.

Some other senators had reservations about the appointment.

“A lot of my constituents feel ISPIRG may not be ready to be a student-funded office,” said College of Business senator David Stout. “They fear that other groups won’t get funding if this happens.”

Jason Carroll, vice chairman of the finance committee, said the current GSB bylaws don’t actually allow for a campus organizer, so making a student-funded office may not make a difference.
