Veishea task force to meet for first time on Thursday

A month after a Veishea-ending riot in Campustown, the task force appointed by ISU President Gregory Geoffroy, Ames Mayor Ted Tedesco, and Government of the Student Body President Sophia Magill will meet Thursday for the first time to address issues arising from the incident.

The meeting of the 2004 Task Force on Assuring Successful Veishea and Other Student/Community Celebrations was called by Catherine Woteki, College of Agriculture dean and task force chairwoman, and will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Cardinal Room of the Memorial Union.

“The clock is ticking,” Woteki said. “We understand it’s difficult because many students aren’t in summer session, but we need to begin these discussions now.”

Pete Englin, dean of students, said this meeting will be a time for the committee to set an agenda.

“We’re going to put together a timeline and schedule meetings for the next six months,” he said. “We just need to ascertain how often we’ll have to meet to get everything accomplished.”

William Rock, GSB vice president, will be sitting in for Magill, who is in Australia until the end of the week. Rock said Geoffroy will be addressing the task force and explaining its purpose as well as charging members with duties. The group will then discuss how to go about achieving its purpose.

Englin said the task force may create workgroups to carry out some of the assigned duties, but as of now he doesn’t know what particular issues they will be addressing.

“It’s a little too early in the process to have issues defined,” he said. “But after this first meeting, it’ll be a lot more clear to all of us how to proceed.”

Rock also said there will be room for public comment at the end of each meeting.

The group is expected to submit its collective recommendation to Geoffroy by Nov. 30.
