Wilson in limbo after draft postponed

When former ISU women’s basketball star Lindsey Wilson checked her e-mail Monday, she learned, along with the rest of the nation, that the WNBA draft scheduled for Wednesday had been postponed.

If the professional women’s basketball league and its players can’t reach an agreement by Friday, the upcoming season could be the next to go.

Wilson, a three-time All-Big 12 performer for the Cyclones, had been receiving interest as a possible draft pick. She said her agent notified her about the decision.

“I don’t know if I expected it, but everything’s been pretty uncertain about the WNBA,” said Wilson, who led the team with 19.3 points and 4.9 assists per game as a senior.

The league and its players have been unable to reach a collective bargaining agreement since the former contract expired Sept. 15. A predraft tryout camp scheduled for last week was canceled. Over the weekend, NBA commissioner David Stern set Friday as the deadline to settle the dispute.

If an agreement isn’t reached, the seventh WNBA season could be canceled.

Most of the debate is over players’ salaries, free agency stipulations and a salary cap. The player’s union initially requested a minimum salary of $75,000 for veterans, up from the $40,000 minimum stated in the previous contract. They have since agreed to lower that request to $48,000, but it still leaves them nearly $7,000 away from the league’s latest offer — $41,200.

The latest proposals also have the two sides split by $134,000 on the salary cap and differing opinions on free agency for veterans.

Both sides met Monday for 90 minutes, but no formal proposals were laid on the table and there are no more talks scheduled this week. Although things seem stalled, Wilson isn’t too worried about the future of the league.

“I think by Friday, I’m confident that it will be resolved,” Wilson said.

Meanwhile, Wilson said she doesn’t plan to change her routine.

“I can’t really do anything but what I’m already doing,” Wilson said. “I’m working out and staying in shape because I’ll be playing somewhere. I’ve got to stop stressing out and realize that it’s out of my hands. I can only worry about my daily workouts and that’s what I’m doing.”

No indication has been given as to if the draft will be rescheduled. Wilson said hopefully there will be good news by Friday.

“It’s disappointing,” Wilson said. “I’m upset that it’s canceled, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens Friday.”
