Defense, new quarterbacks highlight game

Iowa State football fans were finally able to see Iowa State’s quarterback race first-hand Saturday in the soggy spring game between the Cardinal team and the White team.

The Cardinal team consisted of starters and fourth-teamers while the white team was powered by second and third-teamers.

The White team was given a 20-0 advantage to start the game, but the Cardinal team got the final say when Tony Yelk’s field goal put them up 30-27 with six seconds to go.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Flynn, who played with the White team in the first half and switched to the Cardinal team at the half, led a 60-yard drive in six plays to set up the winning field goal.

Junior quarterback Chris Love played opposite of Flynn, and showed some skills with a 70-yard touchdown pass to Jon Davis to tie the score for the White team with 5:45 left in the game.

“Both of them did some real good things, a little better when they were with the [first team], naturally,” head coach Dan McCarney said. “Chris did a nice job late on the long pass to Jon Davis.”

Love, who owns the top quarterback spot at this point due to experience, wasn’t as happy with his performance as he could have been, but did recognize the effect of the bad conditions.

“I had an all right day,” Love said. “The ball was a little wet, but you’ve got to make some plays.”

Love’s combined performance for the day was 12 of 24 passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Flynn finished the day with seven completions on 12 attempts for 64 yards overall.

With the fall season still very far off, Flynn is confident and excited to keep the competition going for the starting role.

“Hopefully, doing two-a-days, I can separate myself a little more,” he said. “Chris did an outstanding job today.”

“The competition will continue to stay strong,” McCarney said. “When you talk about how close it is, that’s going to be a great battle to see who’s going to come out No. 1.”

Running back Hiawatha Rutland, who has been highly praised by McCarney as of late, finished the game with 90 yards on 12 carries.

Iowa State’s defense impressed the quarterbacks as players like Tyson Smith, Jordan Carstens and Nick Leaders harassed the passers all day. Flynn said the defense may be scary for some teams in the Big 12.

Nik Moser had three tackles for the Cardinal team and Gabe Bakker, Steve Paris, Matt Robertson and Kyle Smith were all solid for the White team with six tackles.

The Cardinal team racked up 413 total yards on the day while the White team only garnered 87 total yards.

The game’s statistics do not include an eight-minute period while the press box was evacuated because of a fire alarm caused by a hotplate placed near an alarm sensor.

Overall, McCarney was happy with how things turned out, saying it was a pretty clean scrimmage overall.

“Not a lot of flags were thrown out there and not many turnovers and a good work day under real, real tough conditions,” McCarney said, referring to the rain. “I’ve got a good taste in my mouth about this football team.”
