Gymnasts fall to Oklahoma

Aching from a bruised heel, Erin Dethloff was a question mark for Friday’s gymnastics meet against Oklahoma. By the time the night was over, she had turned it into an exclamation point.

Dethloff has now broken the all-time freshman record in the all-around three times in the first eight meets of her ISU career after turning in a 39.60 in a loss to No. 19 Oklahoma Friday.

“Erin did awesome tonight,” ISU head coach K.J. Kindler said. “She was hurt all week and came out like a fighter.”

The Cyclones (4-6), who had seen their second-highest ranking of the season when they moved up to 16th nationally after defeating Minnesota, lost to the Sooners 196.950-196.150. Iowa State dropped to 0-3 in the Big 12.

Building off the momentum the Cyclones picked up in a win over Minnesota last week, they turned their best performance of the season on the floor exercise.

Dethloff and senior Karen Kuplicki tied for first on the floor, along with Oklahoma’s Particia Aoki. Both Cyclones set career highs with a 9.95 — and freshman Laura-Kay Powell registered a career high with a 9.925 — but Kindler said her team’s strong showing on the floor didn’t carry over to the other events.

“We had our best floor routine of the year. Unfortunately, we had too many mistakes on the vault, bars and beam,” Kindler said.

But Dethloff won the vault (9.85) and the uneven bars (9.925). Her third place finish on the beam was just behind Cyclone Susan Stock, who took second despite still feeling some pain from a foot she injured last week.

Jessica Oney also took third on the vault with a 9.825.

The Cyclones will get another chance to pick up their first conference win Friday when the Missouri Tigers claw their way to Ames. The meet is set for 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
