Government of the Student Body President-elect Mike Banasiak and Vice President-elect Ben Albright are actively seeking students to fill executive cabinet positions.

Applications will be available Friday in the GSB office in the East Student Office Space of the Memorial Union or on the GSB Web site at www.gsb.iastate.edu.

Forms may be submitted online, but interested students must sign up for an interview time in the GSB office. The submission deadline is April 9.

Interviews will most likely be April 12 and 13, Banasiak said.

Positions available include chief of staff, director for governmental relations, director for student diversity, deputy director for disabilities, deputy director for international students, director for safety, traffic and transportation, director for academic affairs, director for student affairs, director for public information, director for campus awareness, secretary and treasurer.

In addition to the 12 cabinet positions, an Ames City Council liaison position will be added to the cabinet, Banasiak said.

This person will sit as an ex officio member on the council. By making this person a cabinet member, Banasiak said the student who fills the position will have “an incentive to become more intricately involved with the job.”

The descriptions of all positions will be posted online.

“Cabinet positions come with a broad definition,” Banasiak said. “[Students] have a lot of room … they can come up with new initiatives and do things more quickly than other branches [of GSB].”

Throughout their candidacy, Banasiak and Albright stressed the importance of a strong cabinet.

“We want to surround ourselves with the most qualified people around” he said.

Each job will require different qualities from its applicants. However, Banasiak said he and Albright are looking for students who are interested, excited and have experience which will help him or her fulfill the duties required.

GSB Office Manager Mary McBirnie said qualifications for each cabinet member vary, but all members must have an interest and background in the area specific to his or her position.

“The most important thing [for an executive to possess is the ability] to start their own initiatives and follow through,” said GSB Chief of Staff Rick Cordaro.

Both McBirnie and Cordaro said cabinet members must be willing to work with one another to accomplish goals.

Leaders who want to have the freedom to accomplish the things they want in the way they want are ideal, Banasiak said.

The final decisions will be made by inauguration, on April 15, and a senate bill to seat the cabinet will be presented April 16.
