GSB allocates money to Amnesty International

The Government of the Student Body senate allocated $369 to the ISU chapter of Amnesty International Council Wednesday. The money will help fund a statewide conference to be hosted at Iowa State.

The money allocated by GSB will be put toward conference supplies and speaker fees. Through participation in the conference, members hope to bring together all concerned individuals and train new activists who may be unfamiliar with Amnesty International itself, said Jon Mullin, ISU Amnesty International president.

“[GSB senators] know human rights are an important part of Iowa State,” Mullin said.

“They help [the university] become diverse and culturally aware.”

GSB Senator Dan Kline was one of four who voted against the initiative to support the council.

Kline said he believes the organization could have included the expenditures for the conference in its budget during regular allocations. The group had not confirmed the event at that time last spring.

“They should go through the same funding requirements as any other student organization,” Kline said.

“The discretionary account is for unseen expenditures [that arise after regular allocations have passed].”

Although the Amnesty International Council is not affiliated with any political organization, Kline said he believes on a large scale, the organization does fight for political causes and GSB does not fund political groups.
