Road win at Nebraska in ISU men’s sights

The ISU men’s basketball team is still searching for its first road win in Big 12 play, and will look for it Saturday in Nebraska.

The men are also in pursuit of a third straight win and more momentum heading into next month’s Big 12 Tournament.

Leading scorer Jake Sullivan said his team’s goals haven’t changed all year, and now is the time to really shoot for them as the team is rolling.

“We’re going to win every game, that’s our goal,” he said. “If you don’t think we can win, don’t get on the bus. A postseason tournament is still our goal.”

Iowa State 14-10 and 4-9 in the Big 12, is playing its best basketball of the season, coming off a come-from-behind victory over Kansas State and a 81-55 routing of Colorado on Tuesday.

“We’re playing with a lot of confidence and that’s very important,” Sullivan said. “We’re very fresh right now and we’re looking forward to another challenge down there.”

The two wins have been a coming-out party for point guard Tim Barnes. The Big 12 Rookie of the Week from last week averaged 20 points for the two games.

The Cyclones ran the court as well as they have all year, beating Colorado with the fast break much of the time.

“Coach is keeping our legs fresh in practice,” Sullivan said. “And Tim is doing such a good job pushing the ball up and down the floor, we’re just following his lead.”

Marcus Jefferson also had a breakout game against Colorado He scored 13 points off the bench and gave a boost to the team.

Jackson Vroman, who added 16 points and 15 boards on Tuesday, is quietly ranking second in the Big 12 in field goal percentage and ninth in rebounding.

Nebraska, 10-16 and 2-11 in conference play, is coming off a victory over Kansas State Tuesday night that ended the Cornhuskers’ nine-game losing streak. The team is without one of its top scorers in Jake Muhlheisen, who was averaging nearly 12 points a game before breaking his hip earlier this season against Kansas. Corey Simms and Nate Johnson are both scoring threats for Nebraska, each averaging 13 points per game.

Jefferson hasn’t been practicing with the team, however, as he has been at the side of his ailing mother in Chicago. He is expected to rejoin the team Friday, according to ISU officials.

Clint Varley, who was suspended indefinitely earlier this week after being arrested and charged with OWI, isn’t expected to play Saturday.
