Cyclones volleyball assistant McCall earns promotion to associate head coach position

After two years as an assistant under head volleyball coach Linda Crum, Jennifer McCall has moved up to an associate head coach position.

The ISU volleyball squad finished 10-22 and 1-19 in the Big 12 Conference in 2002. It was a six-game improvement in the overall record from the previous season, in which Iowa State only won four matches. In 2000, the squad only won two games and was winless in league play.

With the loss of only one senior, Mandi Harms, the Cyclones have great optimism for the 2003 season.

Crum said McCall has been an integral part of the progress the program has made.

“Jennifer is an outstanding coach and is extremely important to the success of our program,” Crum said. “She has had a major impact here in a short amount of time and she is very instrumental in the upward turn of the volleyball program. She has certainly earned the position.”

McCall could not be reached for comment. She is currently recruiting players for next season and will not return until next week, ISU officials said.

McCall, a four-year starter and team captain at Florida State from 1990-1993, began her coaching career at Auburn. She was a graduate assistant for two years and served as an assistant for three seasons.

While with Auburn, McCall helped the Tigers record a 98-52 record and five players earned all-Southeastern Conference honors.

With the Cyclones, McCall focuses on coaching the offense and works individually with the setters. McCall, who finished second on Florida State’s all-time assists chart with 2,888 in her career, also works with recruiting and scouting opponents.

In her new position, McCall will split the day-to-day running of practices with Crum.

The Littleton, Colo., native graduated from Florida State in 1994 and earned her master’s degree in health and human performance at Auburn three years later.
