Annual Spring Fashion Show celebrates 20th year

Students at Iowa State don’t have to fly to Paris to see a fashion show. They can see one right here on campus.

On April 12 and 13, ISU students will display their designs at Fisher Theater in the 20th Annual Spring Fashion Show.

“We have mounted exhibit designs and also a runway show,” said Kari Zevenbergen, junior in apparel and merchandising and co-producer of the show. “There are different categories within the show such as evening wear, casual wear and experimental designs and collections.”

The designs included in the show are selected by a panel of four judges one week prior to the show.

“The designs are original,” said Emily Whitmer, senior in textiles and clothing and co-producer of the show. “We usually have experimental pieces, garments made with unique materials such as tarp and paper. Hopefully this year we will have more digitally printed garments.”

Along with the runway show, mounted designs will be exhibited in the foyer of Fisher Theater.

“The mounted exhibit usually consists of garments that will not be on the runway, portfolios and other miscellaneous items,” Whitmer said.

A segment featuring designs by guest designer Lisa Hendrickson, an ISU alumnus and the head designer for Motherhood Maternity, will also be included in the show.

“We chose Lisa this year because we have never had a maternity designer and thought it would be interesting,” Zevenbergen said. “The planning for this year’s show seems to be coming along very well.”

A theater design class, along with the set/tech committee, is working to design and build the set, which will relate to the show’s theme, “Transmission,” Sevenbergens said.

“The set will have graffiti-like paint,” Zevenbergen added. “The runway might also be made to look like a sidewalk.”

Tickets for the show were available through Ticketmaster beginning on March 1. The tickets cost $8.50 for Friday night and $10.50 for Saturday night. Tickets are priced higher for Saturday night because it is the awards night for the show.

“We will be giving awards out for each category as well as some awards that are sponsored by businesses or individuals,” Zevenbergen said.

Zevenbergen also said that there will be a High Tea in the afternoon before the Saturday night show.

“Models wearing designs from the show will be at High Tea to showcase the garments,” she said.

The models in the show are ISU students who were selected in early February. Seven men and 27 women will model.

Whitmer and Zevenbergen were also involved in last year’s show as junior co-producers.

“It’s so exciting, very electric,” Whitmer said. “I was backstage during last year’s show helping the models, but I could still feel the energy from the show.”

The co-producers both agree that the main purpose of the show is to display students’ work.

“It’s a student-run operation, so we really try to focus on the students. It is also great exposure for the department,” Whitmer said.

“Many of the designers don’t get to showcase their designs often and this helps to get the word out to people,” Zevenbergen added.
