Dogs pounded by big three

DES MOINES – A lot can happen in five minutes. Just ask Drake.

Down six to the No. 5 ISU women’s basketball team with 5:11 in the first half, Lindsey Wilson led the Cyclones on a run that put the Bulldogs down 15 as the half came to a close and sent Iowa State on its way to a 90-60 win Wednesday night at the Knapp Center.

Wilson ended the half in fashion, draining a three-pointer with eight seconds left in front of the Drake bench.

“They had to be a little wobbly after that,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “It was one of those saved-by-the-bell kind of things.”

Wilson finished the game with a career-high 28 points and handed out eight assists, involving stars Tracy Gahan and Angie Welle.

Both finished with 19 points. Welle added 11 rebounds posting her 36th career double-double.

“That was a performance we’d all like to bottle and save forever,” Fennelly said. “[Drake] caught us on a bad night; there’s no doubt about it.”

Iowa State was questioned after a narrow 75-74 overtime win at Creighton on Nov. 27, but used the time off to rest and find its game.

“I think the break really helped us,” Welle said. “You can kind of get regrouped and refocused.”

The focus showed as the Cyclones hit nearly 60 percent of their shots (32 of 54) and out-rebounded the No. 24 Bulldogs 37 to 32.

“I think a lot of teams were questioning, `are we really No. 5 in the country?'” Gahan said.

“We did have a lot to prove [after the Creighton game]. I think we all wanted to bounce back and play really well as a team.”

While the team had an overall solid performance with Kelly Cizek adding eight points and Mary Cofield four, it was the `Big Three’ of Wilson, Welle and Gahan who provide the bulk of the scoring and can take the wind out of an opponent’s sails.

The trio combined for 66 points – six more than the entire Drake team.

“We expected Gahan, Wilson and Welle to pretty much be their offense,” Drake forward Erin Richards said, “and they were.”

Richards, who entered the game averaging 14.5 points per game, was held to six points and only three shots by a tenacious Cyclone defense.

Stephanie Schmitz led the Bulldogs with 19 points, followed by Carla Bennett with 12.

“I told the players . the goal was to hold their three key players, Steph, Carla and Erin to 36 points. That was the goal, and they got 37,” Fennelly said.

The Cyclones will now turn their focus to Northwestern on Saturday.

After its first win at Drake since 1995, and biggest ever at the Knapp Center, the team hopes to stay on a roll.

“We had to find another level of our game and we did,” Fennelly said.

– ISU forward Melanie Bremer has been suspended for the remainder of the first semester for violating team rules.

Bremer was averaging 3.3 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. She will be eligible to play again after Iowa State plays Northern Iowa on Dec. 22.
