Noon bells, memorial for victims

The tolling of the Campanile at noon will signal Iowa State’s recognition of President George W. Bush’s designation of today as a national day of prayer and remembrance.

A noon ceremony on Central Campus will honor those who were injured or killed in Tuesday’s terrorist attacks, ISU President Gregory Geoffroy said. All noon classes are canceled.

“It’s important to the nation. This is a real tragedy,” he said. “It’s important that we take time out to remember the lives that have been lost and all that have been affected by the tragedy.”

The observance’s speakers will include Geoffroy, Ames Mayor Ted Tedesco, Fritz Wehrenberg of the religious leaders association, Suzanne Zilber of the ISU Student Counseling Service, Vice President for Student Affairs Thomas Hill, student leaders and faculty members.

Members of the ISU choirs will provide music.

Andy Tofilon, president of the Government of the Student Body, said GSB will be handing out 5,000 red, white and blue ribbons to students at the event.

“This is something students could do to show their support for this country, the victims and all the people that have been personally touched by this,” he said.

Hill said classes were canceled to allow all students, faculty and staff the chance to attend the ceremony.

“It’s an opportunity for the entire university and Ames community to come together,” he said.

Classes will continue as usual after the observance.

“We really feel that as soon as we can get back to as normal a routine as possible, the better,” Hill said.
