The Iowa State men’s track team ended their season this past weekend at the Big 12 Championships in College Station, Tex., collecting 41 points over four days to end up with a ninth-place finish..

Two `Clones led the way with second-place showings in their respective events.

Daniel Kaczmarczyk ended in the runner-up position in the long jump with a leap of 7.89 meters. That jump gave the freshman a provisional invitation to the national championships.

Senior Zech Schiebout also made the championship field, finishing second in the discus after a throw measuring 61.16 meters.

The distance was good enough to automatically qualify him for the NCAAs.

Other top-five results included a fourth-place time by senior standout Andy Long in the 110-meter high hurdles and a fifth-place finish by the 400-meter relay squad.

The cardinal and gold ended four events in sixth position, including results by Mark Boeckmann in the hammer throw, Tunji Gawa in the long jump, Troy Weiland’s 800-meter run effort, and the 1600-meter relay team.

Junior Mike Mwangong and freshman Andy Kohler also gained points for the Cyclones.

Mwangong placed seventh in the 10,000-meter run, while Kohler tied for seventh in the high jump.

Now with the regular season completed, some of the cardinal and gold members can concentrate on trying to make the NCAA Championships.

According to ISU head coach Steve Lynn, at least 17 athletes will be chosen for the individual events, while 10 teams will assuredly make it in.

After the Big 12 event, three Cyclone men are in contention for spots in the NCAA championships.

Schiebout, Kaczmarczyk, and Long all rank in the top 17 athletes in their respective events.

The meet will take place in Eugene, Ore. The participants for the event will be selected later this week.
