The ISU women’s golf team finally got back on the course as their spring season started this past weekend in Tucson, Ariz. The squad fired a two-day total of 623 to finish eighth at the Mountain View Collegiate tournament.”It was great to finally get the chance to be outside again,” ISU senior Cathy Ennis said. “[The first tournament] is always tough, but I think we did pretty well.”The University of Colorado hosted the event and ended up winning the team title after fighting through a playoff. International Pacific College shot 603 to tie the Buffaloes after 36 holes, but couldn’t hang on to win the tournament.Arizona finished a close third, one stroke out of the playoff, which started a logjam at the top of the leaderboard. In all, the top six teams completed their rounds within six strokes of the champions.”We really wanted to beat a couple of teams that were there, but we have to look at [the tournament] as a stepping stone for what’s to come in the rest of the spring,” Ennis said.Leading the way for the Cyclones was senior Noel Jacobusse, who fired two consecutive rounds of 75 to finish at 150 and in a tie for ninth. Sophomore Laura Wells ended three strokes behind Jacobusse, tying for 20th place.Freshman Lisa Meshke fired a 157 while Ennis and Sarah Gilbert struggled during the first round. Ennis rebounded to shoot 163 and Gilbert also showed improvement on the second day, completing the tourney at 169.Kansas State’s Elise Carpentier won medalist honors with her score of 145, two shots in front of three other golfers. After a fall session in which the Iowa State squad won two tournaments, the outlook for spring is very hopeful.”We’re all motivated by the potential to play in the postseason and the fact that we are hosting the Big 12 tournament,” Ennis said.
