Iowa State began its 2001 baseball campaign on a bittersweet note this weekend by losing all three of its games to Air Force at Falcon Field in Colorado. The Cyclones lost both games Saturday by scores of 4-2 and 6-4. They also lost the last of the three-game series Sunday, 12-8.In game one, the Cyclones began the season with a two-out hit by Ryan Wickham that scored Jake Brown, who reached base on an error. The run was unearned. But Air Force came back and did all of its damage in the bottom of the first and fifth innings. Brian LaBasco and Adam Howes both scored unearned runs in the first, both on Cyclone errors. In the fifth inning, Gerremy Goldsberry drove in two more Falcon runs to insure their win. Mike Thiessen and Howes scored.Iowa State’s offensive difficulties showed in the second inning. After Brent Koen singled to right field, Joe Urban stepped in and grounded into a double play to essentially end the Cyclones’ chances of scoring in that inning. The Cyclones did not get another hit until the seventh inning when Iowa State tried to come back. Mike Wilcox led off the inning with Iowa State’s only seventh-inning hit, a single to left field and scored later, thanks to an error by LaBasco, a shortstop for the Falcons. Matt Kaercher (1-0) took the win for the Falcons, allowing only three Cyclone hits and striking out nine batters. Charly Bigwood (0-1) took the loss for Iowa State. In the second game, Iowa State fell behind, 3-1, before they could make a rally which began in the sixth inning. Rob Conway singled to center field, which scored Zeller. Wickham missed a huge opportunity to do more damage when he lined out to left field. After the Falcons tacked on one more run in their half of the sixth to gain back its two-run lead, Hampton hit his first double of the year to left field in the seventh. The double scored Bohn, who had reached base earlier on a fielder’s choice. The Cyclones tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth with a home run to left field by Conway. It seemed that the Cyclones had a chance to win the game, but Goldsberry stopped that.Goldsberry hit a two-run home run to left field in the bottom half of the eighth that gave Air Force its final margin. Josh Twedt (0-1) took the loss for the Cyclones. In the wild capper Sunday, Iowa State fell behind quickly after three innings, 9-0. But Iowa State would not quit.In the fourth inning, Wickham singled to center, which scored Rob Conway, who doubled in the previous at-bat. Wickham then scored when Bohn had his own single to center. The rally continued in the fifth when Iowa State gained momentum with a lead-off triple by Spencer Allen. Zeller then doubled and Allen scored. Conway then reamed a triple to right field, scoring Zeller. Conway then scored when Wickham came back at bat on an error by the Air Force first baseman.Iowa State then scored another run when Zeller scored on an Air Force error in the sixth. Two final runners scored for Iowa State in the seventh when Koen hit a double to left field, scoring Wilcox. Koen then scored himself when Urban grounded into a double play. The Cyclones went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to end the game.Goldsberry knocked in nine runs for the weekend. “He single-handedly beat us,” ISU head coach Lyle Smith said.”We did not execute,” Smith said. “I was very disappointed in how we approached our offensive game. We had a tough adjustment of going from inside to outside.”
