ISU sophomore is State Fair queen

ISU students have royalty living among them. Katie Greiman, sophomore in communication studies, was crowned State Fair Queen in Des Moines earlier this month. “I was really surprised,” Greiman said about winning the pageant at the Iowa State Fair grounds on Saturday, Aug. 12. Representing Black Hawk County as its candidate for State Fair Queen, Greiman participated in pageant activities such as a business interview, a group discussion, appearances on stage in a sports-wear outfit and a final interview in a dress, she said. “I think at Miss America the judges are looking more for beauty, but here the judges are looking more for a good, wholesome Iowa girl,” she said. After being crowned, Greiman spent the rest of her time at the state fair making appearances and carrying out Iowa State Fair queen traditions, such as getting her picture taken with a python at the Snakes Alive exhibit, she said. Being busy is nothing new for Greiman, who is starting her second term as the GSB disabilities senator. “I represent the disabilities population,” said Greiman, who suffers from an 80 percent hearing loss and has worn hearing aids since she was two years old. “I promote the awareness of disabilities and make sure [disabled students] have the accommodations they need.” GSB President Ben Golding said Greiman deserves the honor of being this year’s state fair queen. “I think she’d make a perfect fair queen,” Golding said. “She really represents Iowa.” She is also a great asset to GSB, he said. “[Katie] has been very dedicated in helping us out,” he said. “I personally enjoy working with her and hanging out with her.” Greiman has been an active member of 4-H and FFA in Blackhawk County, and she is “a very special part of the Blackhawk County program,” said Rita Cyrzan, member of the fair board. “She is a very genuine, very sincere and very deserving young lady for the crown,” Cyrzan added. “I don’t think there is one person who could not support her 200 percent in being the queen, not even her competition. We’re all very proud of her.” Although Greiman said she has thought about competing in other pageants such as Miss Cowgirl or Miss Iowa, being in the Iowa State Fair pageant was a highlight for her that she wants to remember. “I think the last memory of a queen I want is a big one,” Greiman said.
