Doughnut craze hits Ames

The tasty treats that for years have been the rage in the South and on the East Coast have finally arrived.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts have come to Ames.

Since Tuesday morning, the pastries have been sold at the city’s five Kum & Go convenience stores, 111 Duff Ave., 4506 Lincoln Way, 3337 Lincoln Way, 203 Welch Ave. and 2801 E. 13th St.

The doughnuts sell at $1.29 for two, $3.49 for a half-dozen and $5.99 for a dozen.

Scott Yarrington, general manager of the Duff Avenue location, said he’s happy the store has began to sell Krispy Kremes.

“They’re a great product, and I’m glad that we’ve got them finally,” he said.

Yarrington said his Kum & Go can barely keep the doughnuts stocked.

“We sold 48 dozen before 11 o’clock this morning,” he said. “We’ve just been borrowing them from other stores so people still have doughnuts to buy.”

He said the appeal of Krispy Kremes is in the oil and frosting used.

“I think what makes them good is you really don’t taste the oil that doughnuts are fried in, and their frosting is the best doughnut frosting I’ve ever tasted,” Yarrington said.

Brooke Brewington, general manager of the Welch Avenue location, said the Kum & Go chain decided to sell Krispy Kremes at Story County stores after they did so well at Des Moines locations. Krispy Kreme doughnuts have been available at Des Moines Kum & Go stores since last fall.

“They were selling really, really good at the stores in Des Moines, so [the chain] decided to bring them here,” she said.

Krispy Kremes come in 12 flavors, Brewington said, including glazed, crullers, devil’s food glaze, blueberry glaze and sour cream glaze. Doughnuts with raspberry, lemon pudding, custard and cream filling are also available.

“They sell a lot better than [the previous pastries] we were selling,” she said. “It’s attracting a lot of new customers.”

Mindy Vincent, senior in marketing and transportation and logistics, and Kelly Turner, senior in speech communication, bought Krispy Kremes at the Welch Avenue Kum & Go Wednesday.

Vincent, who chose a doughnut with sprinkles, said she thinks Krispy Kremes are delicious.

“They’re very moist and soft,” she said. “They’re good.”

Turner, munching on a glazed doughnut, had even higher praise for her Krispy Kreme.

“They’re phat with a ‘ph,'” she said.

The two of them plan to buy many more Krispy Kremes in the future, they said.

“We’ll be here all the time,” Vincent said. “After hitting the bars, hit Kum & Go for the doughnuts.”
