Cyclone hockey sweeps Wisconsin-Whitewater

Greg Jones’ slapshot from just inside the blue line with 7:17 left in the third period of Saturday night’s game secured a Cyclone sweep of Wisconsin-Whitewater over the weekend.

The Cyclones, ranked fifth in the ACHA, went on to overcome the Warhawks 6-3 on Saturday night after already defeating them 4-3 Friday night.

This weekend’s sweep improved the team’s record to 8-2 since winter break and marks the second weekend sweep in a row for the Cyclones.

The squad is now 22-10-1 in the ACHA and 10-6 in the CSCHL.

“The coaches are doing a great job of keeping us motivated and intense during practice and games,” forward Glenn Detulleo said. “We know that we have to continue to come out and play our best if we want our success to continue.”

Friday night, the Cyclones spread the scoring attack around as Detulleo, Mike Anderson, Kevin Koski and Andrew Murdoch each scored a goal.

“Both games were very physical and required us to fight through checks to get to the net,” said assistant coach Chuck Wight. “It’s good practice for what we will face in the CSCHL tournament.”

Saturday night, the Cyclones had four defensemen find the net as Jones, Jason McCollum, Rob Rose and Tory Larson chipped in from the blue line.

Detulleo, currently the ACHA’s leading scorer, rounded out Saturday night’s scoring with his 49th and 50th goals of the season.

“He is out there playing with quality players, and it was great to see him net his 50th goal,” Wight said. “It’s a credit to Glenn’s mental toughness and physical conditioning.”

Detulleo, who has been faced with being the focal point of the opposing team’s defense, tries not to let the defensive pressure bother him.

“It can either frustrate you, or you can take it as a compliment that they feel you deserve that much attention,” Detulleo said. “I just continue playing hard because I know with the linemates I have that eventually I will get chances to score.”

Phil Popp, the Cyclones’ freshman goalie, was consistent in front of the nets again, turning away 26 shots on Friday and 21 shots on Saturday.

His play has Cyclone coaches upbeat with the CSCHL tournament just around the corner.

“Phil has been very steady for us and for a big goaltender he is very agile and effective at using his size to take away a lot of shots,” Wight said. “Each game he is getting better and better.”

This weekend the Cyclones stay at home to face St. Louis, and Wight knows the team can’t look past the Billikens to the following weekends CSCHL tournament.

“This team is definitely hitting it’s stride, and this is the time to do that, but we have to focus on this weekend’s opponent,” Wight said.

Saturday night’s game will mark Head Coach Al Murdoch’s 1,000th game behind the bench for the Cyclones.

Murdoch has amassed over 600 victories, a lifetime winning percentage of .621 and ranks as the only ISU coach in any sport to have over 500 career wins.
