The Iowa State chapter of the American Association of University Professors will meet today from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Gallery of the Memorial Union to discuss the university’s post-tenure review policy, among other issues.

“It’s a policy according to which all tenured faculty members will have to go through a rigorous review at least once every seven years,” said Bob Hollinger, president of the ISU AAUP.

According to the policy, tenured faculty members would negotiate with their departments to see what is necessary to improve their teaching or other skills, said Hollinger, professor of philosophy.

But some people are worried about potential misuses of the policy, he said, such as using the review to demote faculty or decrease their salaries.

“There are a lot of faculty who think that, although the post-tenure review policy looks tame and non-threatening, at least it has the potential to have adverse consequences for faculty members,” Hollinger said.

Hollinger said the AAUP wants to make sure professors’ rights and freedoms are taken into account.

“I hope if people are concerned with the effects of this policy, they can at least come to the meeting and express their views,” he said.

The meeting is open to the public.
