Freshman council helps less fortunate

Although the holiday season is many people’s favorite time of the year, it can be a very difficult time for less fortunate members of society.

The Freshman Council will be reaching out to some of these people this week to bring them a little holiday cheer.

“I guess this is kind of our Christmas week,” said Justin Hattan, sophomore in economics.

The council plans to take children from Beloit to see some of the Christmas lights in the area on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Hattan, co-chairman of the Freshman Council’s philanthropy committee, said they plan to take individuals who would otherwise not be able to see the lights.

Then on Thursday, Dec. 4, the council will be traveling to Mary Greeley Medical Center to sing Christmas carols to patients.

Hattan said council members will be putting together packages of candy canes and Christmas decorations to hand out.

“We will be decorating in the wings that they will let us go down,” he said.

This is the first time the Freshman Council has done this.

Hattan expressed interest in making it an annual activity. It is this kind of activity that fulfills the purpose of Freshman Council, he said.
