Changes in store for GSB vice president?

The Government of the Student Body Constitutional Convention Committee unanimously voted to no longer include the vice president as the chair of the Senate at Sunday night’s convention meeting.

The motion also stated that a senator, who would be elected by the Senate, will serve as the chair.

Convention delegates discussed the possibility of having the vice president take the role of chief of staff, but that notion is still under debate.

The convention delegates also modified the president’s selection process for cabinet members.

“Cabinet positions will be on three levels: the constitutional, through by-laws and through presidential nomination,” said Jamey Hansen, chairman of the Constitutional Convention.

The convention struck out all but two of the positions that are in the current constitution.

The two cabinet positions remaining are director of student information and director of financial affairs.

The convention delegates added a provision that said a cabinet member may be added through Senate by-laws. Under the motion, the senate can add a cabinet member with a vote, and the position will remain until the senate votes it out.

The third possibility in which a cabinet position can be formed is through presidential nomination.

With a proper justification of a job description and a Senate approval, a president can make a cabinet position that would last until the end of his or her term.

Hansen said all the decisions made in Sunday’s debate are still subject to change.

He hopes to have the constitution ready to be presented to the student body by April 16. The voting process has yet to be determined.

The next meeting will be Sunday, March 16 at 5 p.m. in the conference room of the East student office space in the Memorial Union.
