GSB candidates set to debate

Campaigning for next year’s Government of the Student Body president and vice president positions has entered its second week and candidates are turning their attentions toward three looming debates.

The first, a presidential debate, will take place today at noon in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union.

The vice presidential candidates will debate on Friday, Feb. 21 at noon in Rooms 244 and 246 of the Union.

And all candidates for the executive positions will participate in a debate on Monday, Feb. 24 at noon in the Oak Room of the Union.

The 1997-98 GSB elections will be held Feb. 25-27. The three-day election is expected to draw more students to the voting booths this year.

Last year, about 1,600 students voted in the one-day election held in the Memorial Union. There are about 25,000 students enrolled at ISU.

The five executive slates include:

* Rory Flaherty, a junior in construction engineering from Le Mars. He is running with Jeff Halliburton, a junior in anthropology from Ames.

Their platform includes rating courses and instructors, making evaluations available to students, re-establishing the charge system at the two university book stores and installing better lighting and more emergency phones on campus.

* Brad Lozan, a sophomore in chemical engineering from Crystal Lake. He is running with Melissa Cross, a sophomore in child and family services from Byron.

Their platform includes using resources like the Internet to inform students about GSB, taking fewer classes so they have more time for GSB, developing a relationship with the state Board of Regents,and developing teacher portfolios.

* LaRhonda Potts, a senior in business from Kansas City, Mo. She is running with Rob Ruminski, a sophomore in history from St. Louis.

Their platform includes insuring consistency and fairness in the allocation of student fees, keeping senators responsible to constituents, initiating outreach programs with minority students and exploring the possibility of making Morrill Hall into cultural center.

* Todd Swanson, a junior in accounting from Johnston. He is running with Amber Powell, a junior in dietetics from Olin.

Their platform includes having GSB’s director of student information talk with students and media, producing a Web page that provides teacher information, standardizing a system for class cancellations and keeping the Orange Route free.

* Rob Wiese, a senior in agriculture studies from Bennett. He is running with Matt McLaren, a junior in agriculture business from Farragut.

Their platform includes creating a director of minority relations on the GSB cabinet, developing a relationship with the governor, having a weekly show on the campus radio station and working with the city council.
