Career fair offers something for all

For the soon-to-be graduates of Iowa State who are looking for good jobs, there may be an event on Tuesday to make the search for a little easier.

Nov. 19, Des Moines will host the Greater Des Moines Career Tech 2000+ career fair. It is free to the public.

The fair is geared for everyone because it explores numerous job fields, such as data processing, management information system professionals, architects, engineers (of all disciplines), drafters, programmers/analysts, information mangers and database analysts/developers.

“This is the first technical fair of the year for Des Moines,” said Mary Schmidt, national media director for Career Fair Group Inc. “Des Moines usually has three fairs a year. Two general fairs and one technical.”

The 1996 fair is expecting to host 26 national and local companies that hire in the Des Moines area. Those who attend the fair will receive a booklet that gives information on the companies and the available positions.

“Each company booth will have a representative from their company’s human resource department. Often times these human resource reps will conduct on the spot interviews,” Schmidt said.

The CFG also holds seminars during the fair that instruct students on the basics of searching for a job. The seminars are free and last about an hour.

The CFG is a professional organization that works with a national bank of companies which includes over 140 professionals in 55 cities. Schmidt also said the companies average three to four career fairs a week.

Schmidt had some advice for potential fair-goers.

“A word of advice to all individuals interested in the fair: Please dress professionally and bring lots of resumes. This is also a great way for college students to learn the interview process,” Schmidt said.
