Bill would name health center after Thielen

Some Government of the Student Body senators want to name the new Student Health Center after retiring Vice President for Student Affairs Tom Thielen.

GSB will take up the bill at Wednesday’s Senate meeting.

Earlier this week Thielen announced plans to retire from the position he has held for the past 20 years. Effective Jan. 1, he will no longer be vice president for student affairs.

He will remain on faculty, teaching one class in the Department of Professional Studies in Education through the spring semester. He will retire May 31, 1997.

Adam Gold, GSB president, announced at Wednesday’s meeting that the bill will be on next week’s agenda. Former GSB President Dan Mangan will be present to support the bill.

Senator John Hamilton, business, proposed the bill.

“I think Dr. Thielen has done a lot of good things for the university, and I thought it would be an excellent way for the students of Iowa State to honor him,” Hamilton said. “Since the money going to build the new Student Health Center is student’s money, I think we should have a say in the naming of the building.”

Hamilton said he hopes the bill is passed quickly without a long discussion.

* The Senate allocated funding for the Golden Key National Honor Society’s central regional conference after a debate over the organization’s budget. Iowa State will host the conference in April.

Representatives from 26 colleges across the nation are expected to attend.

The organization asked GSB for $3,000 to cover some of its expenses. The bill was amended from $3,000 to $1,950, after cutting funding for a disc jockey and decorations from the budget.

* The Men’s Soccer Club also received funding to help pay expenses for travel to a national contest. Most of the men on the soccer team were present at the meeting. Team members will fly to the Nationals, but the Senate only granted funding for the amount it would take to travel in vans.
