Statue of Trice may soon be set in motion

The future location of the Jack Trice statue, the first African-American football player at Iowa State and the only ISU athlete to ever die because of injuries sustained in competition, will be decided at the Government of the Student Body Meeting tonight.

The bill proposes that the statue be moved from its current location between Beardshear Hall and Carver Hall to a new location north of the Ralph Olsen/Richard Jacobson Building.

This would place the statue much closer to Cyclone Stadium and more specifically, Jack Trice Field.

Another portion of the bill suggests that the name of the football stadium be changed from Cyclone Stadium/Jack Trice Field to Jack Trice Stadium.

This bill has wide support throughout the GSB.

“I found this bill wholly appropriate. It (the statue relocation) is also something that Adam Gold has been planning for sometime. It’s my understanding he’s talked about this with Gene Smith to see if it was appropriate,” said Veronique Cantrell-Avloes, LAS seat.

Cantrell-Avloes also said she supported Gold on this issue, and that if the bill was passed it would complete one of Gold’s campaign promises.

“I think this was in his campaign. This is at least one issue I can commend Adam on,” Cantrell-Avloes said.

GSB President Adam Gold said that Gene Smith approved of the idea for relocating the statue. Gold also said there was more progress toward changing the name of the stadium now then ever before.

“Smith thought the movement of the statue was a great idea. As for the name change, it is currently at the committee level and that’s further than it has ever been before. We’re going to continue to push and hopefully get this done,” Gold said.

Cantrell-Avloes believes the statue was originally intended to be placed near Jack Trice Field.

“The reason I think Adam was wondering if it was appropriate was because there actually was debate for where the statue is now,” Cantrell-Avloes said. “The original intention was to put it in the stadium in the first place, but the senate at that time had debate on placement and decided it would be most visible between Carver and Beardshear and now we’re sort of reverting to the original plan.”
