Candidate promises not to make promises about funding for educational programs

Students, term limits and congressional reform are the issues being addressed by one candidate in the Third Congressional District race.

Mike Mahaffey, Republican candidate for the Third District seat, said he has a commitment to college students in his district. He said the issue of student financial aid is definitely a vital one.

According to a press release, Mahaffey said he would support reasonable programs to open educational opportunities but he would not engage in a marathon of promises that mislead today’s students and their parents.

Mahaffey’s main priority will be to support additional funding for student loans.

“I favor and will support the effort to increase funding for student loans by 50 percent over the next seven years,” Mahaffey said.

Mahaffey is a supporter of term limits in Congress, whether they are imposed by Congress or self-imposed by the congress people themselves.

“I think we need more men and women to get into office, say maybe between two to 12 years, do their best, try and make a difference then leave and give someone else a chance to try and make a difference,” he said.

Mahaffey is quick to admit that politics can become an obsession for many of those involved.

Mahaffey said over the next few years drastic changes will have to be made in areas such as education, welfare, Social Security and Medicare if they are going to be available for the next generation.

“I want everyone to take a look at each of the three campaigns in this race, look at what each one has been willing to talk about,” Mahaffey said. “We need to make some choices to make some changes. So look at the different campaigns and who is talking about what and make a choice.”
