Senators try to take Gold to task with censure bill

Several Government of the Student Body senators are trying to pass a bill at tonight’s meeting that will allow senators to censure President Adam Gold.

The bill, written by senators Milton McGriff, non-traditional, Allan Nosworthy, graduate, and Arthur Green, USAC, came about due to Gold’s “inappropriate action of requesting Adviser [Terri] Houston’s resignation.”

Following a GSB meeting on Oct. 9, Houston criticized the senators for their behavior during the meeting. The next day Gold met with Houston and asked for her resignation.

The bill states that Gold asked Houston to resign without giving her specific reasons why and without consulting with the Senate.

“Gold was not prepared on Oct. 16 to tell the GSB Senate specific reasons for requesting Houston’s resignation,” the bill alleges.

The bill further states Gold showed disdain, insensitivity and disrespect to about 150 members of the ISU community by refusing to give them specific reasons for requesting Houston’s resignation.

Gold said the purpose of the bill is to express some senators’ discontent with a decision he made.

“No one’s real sure of the exact implications. They’re just saying, ‘We don’t approve of a certain action,'” Gold said.

He said he thinks the Senate vote on the bill will be very close. “I expect half to vote for it and half to not.”

If the bill is passed, Gold said he would sign it. It would not require him to explain himself or to do anything about the incident.

None of the senators listed on the bill could be reached for comment.
