More people, more alcohol means more police officers will be hitting the streets

Homecoming is a time for parades, parties and good old fashioned fun. The Cyclone spirit will be in full effort come Saturday.

Next to Veishea, Homecoming sparks the highest use of alcohol among students. This in turn causes more alcohol related arrests, such as public intoxication and underage possession of alcohol violations.

Department of Public Safety Lieutenant Steve Hasstedt, said the increase of alcohol consumption is definitely a major concern and will cause more incidents with the police than any other weekend.

“With the large numbers of people coming in from out of town and a lot more partying going on there will be more alcohol related incidents involving students as well as out-of-towners,” he said.

More people in town will increase the need to deal with a higher volume of people than usual on the weekends. There is likely to be more officers scheduled this weekend, he said.

“About 4 more officers will be scheduled per night during the Homecoming weekend.”

He said the goal of law enforcement officials is to try and keep these violations down to a minimum without infringing on people having fun.

“We want everyone to have a great Homecoming. All we ask is that you be careful and be responsible. Don’t drink and drive, get drunk and unruly or get into trouble,” Hasstedt said. “The bottom line is to be safe.”
