GSB reconsiders M.U. resolution

The Government of the Student Body voted 17-16 during a special session Wednesday to reconsider a resolution passed Oct. 18 in favor of relocating the Memorial Union’s Browsing Library and Chapel.

The bill was brought about by Sen. Wassef Masri, who said Sen. Jason Waldron’s vote on last week’s resolution was unconstitutional. Waldron’s presence on the Senate came into question when the Senate learned there was one too many off-campus senators seated. Waldron eventually resigned.

“We have to vote to reconsider,” Sen. Brian Allen said. “The fact that we weren’t operating within the Constitution is a very dangerous precedent to a resolution against the constitution.”

“If we are going to be a body we have to follow the Constitution,” added Sen. Matthew Goodman. “I think if we want any respect from the students we have to follow the Constitution which we hold to us like a holy grail.”

However, some senators voiced their opposition to reconsider, saying no new information had been presented. The Oct. 18 vote is now nullified, but, since the passed motion was made during a special session, the Senate will have to vote again on the reconsideration bill at its regular meeting Nov. 1.

Allen later commended the Senate for its decision to reconsider. “It’s a good thing,” he said. “Whatever happens now will happen in the confines of the Constitution.”
