The Iowa State track and field team split up for the weekend. Most Cyclones headed to Arkansas to compete in the Tyson Invitational, while some headed up to Boston to compete in the BU Valentine invite.
The Cyclones faced stout competition at both meets and the results showed that. Iowa State struggled to find success on either day of the two-day meets.
BU Valentine Invite struggles
The Cyclones that went up to Boston struggled to find any sort of success.
Senior Leroy Russell III placed 19th in the men’s 800-meter dash. Junior Emanuel Galdino came in 12th in the men’s one mile.
Senior Said Mechaal placed 12th in the men’s 3000-meter run. Freshman Robin Kwemoi Bera and redshirt sophomore Ryan Watts also placed 47th and 52nd in the 5000-meter run.
Cyclones find success in men’s 800-meter dash
The men’s 800-meter dash ended up being one of the more successful events for the Cyclones on the weekend.
Senior Darius Kipyego placed fourth with a time of 1:47. Fellow senior Dugion Blackman set a new season best for himself with a time of 1:47.29 and came in seventh. Rounding out the top nine was senior Aman Thornton who also set a new season best with a time of 1:47.34.
Women’s 3000-meter run places three in the top 12
Another better-showing event for Iowa State was the women’s 3000-meter run.
Sophomore Sheridan Wheeler placed sixth with a personal best time of 9:31.31. Fellow sophomores Sydney Morrell and McKinley Wheeler came in 11th and 12th respectively. Morrell also set a new personal best with a time of 9:39.69 and McKinley Wheeler set a new season best at 9:40.31.
The Cyclones will look to bounce back and create momentum next Friday when they head to the Iowa Open in Iowa City, while some also head back to Arkansas to compete in the Arkansas Qualifier.
