The Iowa State track and field team will be split for the week as they compete at the Bryan Clay Invite, hosted by Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California, and the Mt. SAC Relays, hosted by Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California.
These two events will be hosted only around eight miles from each other, so while the Cyclones will be splitting up between these two events, they’ll still be close to each other.
This gives the Cyclones a unique opportunity to enter athletes in two events. This is something Iowa State could take advantage of, as they currently have eight athletes signed up for both competitions.
Senior Sam Austin is set to run in the men’s 800-meter run at the Bryan Clay Invite and the men’s 800-meter run elite at the Mt. SAC Relays. Red-shirt freshman Tommy Tyynismaa is also entered in the men’s 800-meter run at both competitions.
Redshirt sophomore Lucas Morrison is currently signed up for both the men’s discus throw and the men’s hammer throw at both competitions. Sophomore Hanson King is entered in the men’s shot put.
Senior Kinsey Christianson, junior Camryn Hubbard and senior Emma Vorpagel are all signed up for the women’s 800-meter run elite at the Mt. SAC Relays and the women’s 800-meter run at the Bryan Clay Invite.
Senior Makayla Clark is also signed up for the women’s 800-meter run elite at the Mt. SAC Relays and the women’s 800-meter run, as well as the women’s 1,500-meter run at the Bryan Clay Invite.
At the Mt. SAC Relays, Iowa State currently has 30 competitors signed up for 40 events, while at the Bryan Clay Invite, the Cyclones have 29 competitors signed up.
The Bryan Clay Invite is a headliner in the track and field outdoor season, as it’s timed to have the best conditions possible to set personal records and top track times to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championship.
The event attracts a large number of entrants, with eight unique events, each having more than 100 entrants.
The men’s and women’s 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 800-meter run, 1,500-meter run, 5,000-meter run, 10,000-meter run and 3,000-meter steeplechase all have over 100 entrants
The largest event is the 1,500-meter run, with 1,509 entrants total; the men’s 1,500-meter run has 772 entrants and the women’s has 737.
The Cyclones should be looking to set personal records and top times in hopes of qualifying for the outdoor NCAA Championships in June.
While the Mt. SAC Relay might not be as large as the Bryan Clay Invitational, it hosts a variety of divisions, including a community college division, an elite division, a college and university division and a high school division.
Additionally, the Mt. SAC Relay will also be hosting Paralympic heptathlon and decathlon events.
The Cyclones will start competing at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday, and their first event of the Mt. SAC Relay will start Friday. Both events will continue through Saturday.
