Texas Tech ends Iowa State’s season

The ISU women’s basketball team’s season came to a close Friday night in the Big 12 Tournament. 

No. 9-seeded Texas Tech (13-17, 4-15 Big 12) downed No. 8-seeded Iowa State (13-17, 5-14 Big 12), 89-84, in Oklahoma City, Okla. The game came down to a battle on the boards, as the Lady Raiders out-rebounded the Cyclones, 45-27. 

The Cyclones started behind the Lady Raiders, falling 11-2 early in the game. But, helped by a 7-0 run to end the first quarter, Iowa State cut the lead to three. Texas Tech led, 21-18, heading into the second quarter.

The Cyclones and Lady Raiders traded baskets early in the second quarter. But Iowa State just edged out Texas Tech heading into halftime, leading 45-43. 

ISU guard Seanna Johnson had 16 points in the first half and freshman Bridget Carleton put up a game-high 19 points with five 3-pointers. 

The third quarter played similarly to the first two quarters. The Cyclones and Lady Raiders went back and forth. Iowa State took its largest lead of the game at the time, going ahead 56-51 midway through the third quarter. 

But Texas Tech would battle back and tie the game at 63 going into the final 10 minutes and setting up a close finish. 

The Lady Raiders overcame an early four-point deficit in the fourth quarter, and quickly jumped out ahead of the Cyclones. Texas Tech would out-shoot Iowa State down the stretch to pull off the victory.
