Week 3 Big 12 women’s basketball power rankings: Texas retains lead, Iowa State stays in 5th

Jadda Buckley, redshirt sophomore guard, prepares to shoot the ball during the women’s basketball game against University of Kansas on Jan. 9.

1. No. 4 Texas (15-0, 4-0 Big 12) (-)

Last week: W- Iowa State (75-54), W- Oklahoma State (78-48)

Texas continued its rein of terror of the Big 12 with back-to-back, 20-plus-point wins against Iowa State and Oklahoma State. If anything, the Longhorns have proven that they are one of the best teams in the nation. The next test: Baylor on Sunday in a No. 4 vs. No. 6 showdown.

2. No. 6 Baylor (16-1, 3-1 Big 12) (-)

Last week: W- Kansas (58-40), W- TCU (72-55)

Baylor proved over the week that its loss to Oklahoma State back on Dec. 30 was just a fluke. Although the Bears beat bottom-feeders Kansas and TCU, they did so convincingly. As I mentioned before, the matchup between Baylor and Texas may very well be the start to determining the Big 12 champion.

3. No. 14 Oklahoma (12-3, 3-1 Big 12) (+1)

Last week: W- TCU (78-65), W- Kansas State (68-58)

Oklahoma overtakes its in-state rival, Oklahoma State, in these rankings. It’s almost exclusively because of the way the Sooners beat their last two opponents. Oklahoma State is just behind, though.

4. Oklahoma State (12-3, 2-2 Big 12) (-1)

Last week: W- Texas Tech (69-46), L- No. 4 Texas (78-48)

Oklahoma State suffered an embarrassing loss to Texas on Wednesday, which capped off its second Big 12 loss in three games. The Cowgirls also fell to Iowa State the Saturday before. Oklahoma takes the third spot this week.

5. Iowa State (11-4, 3-1 Big 12) (-)

Last week: L- No. 4 Texas (75-54), W- Kansas (65-49)

The Cyclones didn’t have a dazzling start to the second week of Big 12 play. But after shouldering a 21-point loss to the Longhorns, they turned right around and beat Kansas. Although the Jayhawks are at the bottom of the Big 12, Iowa State still took care of business.

6. West Virginia (14-3, 3-1 Big 12) (+1)

Last week: W- Kansas State (72-53), W- Texas Tech (79-57)

The Mountaineers have been big movers in the past two weeks. After dropping back to back games against Gonzaga and Southern California, West Virginia has won 12 of its last 13 games. The only loss: No. 4 Texas. The Mountaineers could keep climbing if they keep up the good work against the Big 12. Now all West Virginia needs to do is beat a bonafide ranked team.

7. TCU (10-5, 2-2 Big 12) (-1)

Last week: L- No. 14 Oklahoma (78-65), L- No. 6 Baylor (72-55)

TCU falls a bit in this week’s rankings because of its inability to keep up with some of the Big 12’s best. Two double-digit losses in a row to two ranked opponents hurts if the Horned Frogs want to ascend to the top half of the conference. Luckily, they’ll take on Texas Tech and Kansas State this week in hopes of ending the losing streak.

8. Kansas State (10-5, 0-4 Big 12) (-)

Last week: L- West Virginia (72-53), L- No. 14 Oklahoma (68-58)

Kansas State stays in the eighth spot merely because Texas Tech is playing as poorly as it is. The Wildcats haven’t mustered a win in Big 12 play and are in the midst of a four-game losing streak. It might be a long season for Kansas State if it can’t knock off the middle-of-the-pack teams in the Big 12.

9. Texas Tech (9-6, 0-4 Big 12) (-)

Last week: L- Oklahoma State (69-46), L- West Virginia (79-57)

Texas Tech is still in the ranks of the three no-win teams in the Big 12. Like the Wildcats, the Lady Raiders are in the middle of a four-game losing streak. But, hey, at least Texas Tech has a winning record, unlike the next team on the list.

10. Kansas (5-10, 0-4 Big 12) (-)

Last week: L- No. 6 Baylor (58-40), L- Iowa State (65-49)

The Jayhawks continued their struggles under new head coach, Brandon Schneider. They are suffering through a six-game losing streak and have no breaks in their schedule. Kansas takes on No. 4 Texas and West Virginia in its next two games. That’ll be tough.
