Expectations for the Cyclones are sky high this season under first year head coach Steve Prohm, but Iowa State kicked off the Prohm era with some sloppy play in their only exhibition game on Friday night.

The Cyclones offense turned the ball over on their first three possessions and missed three of their first four shots before rattling off eight points in just over a minute.

Once the Iowa State offense started clicking, it didn’t stop.

The Cyclones pushed a 10-5 lead out into a 24-11 with a hot shooting streak. The Cyclones hit five of seven 3-pointers, with five different Cyclones each hitting one.

After a slight lull left the game at 33-17 in favor of the Cyclones, Iowa State finished out the half with a 19-4 run that included four straight made 3-pointers courtesy of Abdel Nader, Matt Thomas, Hallice Cooke and Naz Mitrou-Long.

The run put Iowa State up 52-21 at the halftime break. Iowa State stuck with a regular rotation for the entire first half, only playing seven players. Nader, Mitrou-Long, McKay, Monté Morris and Niang started the game with Cooke and Thomas playing off the bench.

The second half was more of the same from the Cyclones, as Mitrou-Long caught fire. Mitrou-Long was 2-2 on 3-pointers in the first half, but then hit on four of his first five 3-pointers to start the second half, and threw in a fastbreak dunk for good measure.

Mitrou-Long’s hot shooting became contagious when Cooke replaced Mitrou-Long on the court. Cooke hit a pair of threes and 6-foot-8 freshman Simeon Carter said hello to the Cyclone fans in his debut with a two-handed slam to push the Iowa State lead out to 86-46 with just under ten minutes left in the game.

Prohm went deeper into his bench as the Cyclones win became imminent. Along with Carter, freshman Brady Ernst got his first action as a Cyclone and walk-on Jordan Ashton entered the game.

Morris and Nader hooked up on a lob that Morris launched from just past half court with about five minutes left to provide some fireworks before the bench players took over.

Prohm cleared his bench with Stuart Nezlek entering the game with just under four minutes remaining.

The Cyclones cruised to a 106-60 victory, with Mitrou-Long leading the way with 20 points. Morris pitched in 17 points and eight assists, McKay registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Niang did a little bit of everything scoring 11 points, pulling down nine boards and dishing out seven assists in just 22 minutes. Nader added 13 points and seven boards to round out the starters.

Thomas and Cooke played well off the bench, with Thomas scoring 12 points and passing out eight assists. Cooke scored 12 points on 4-5 shooting from behind the arc.
