Sheldon Croney, an ISU running back recruit, shot himself in the hand on May 5 around 2:29 p.m., according to a release by the Bakersfield Police in California.

The report said Croney and a friend were at another friend’s house where they found their friend’s father’s handgun, who was away at the time. Croney “manipulated” the handgun, which made it fire and hit him in the left hand, according to the release.

He was transported to Kern Medical Center for the injuries, according to the report.

Croney signed his letter of intent in Februrary on National Signing Day. The Ridgeview High School standout ran for 2,271 yards and 32 touchdowns in his senior season on his way to all-state first-team honors.

The weapon that injured Croney was seized and the investigation is still continuing, according to the release.
