’70s trends make comeback

Talk about blast from the past. It’s a known fact that fashion trends are cyclical and that has been quite apparent this season with the return of ’70s fashions appearing on runways, in showrooms and street style everywhere. We’re not talking full-fledged bell-bottoms. This time around, it’s all about the subtle touches of lapel shapes, earthy hues, an adequate supply of denim and flared silhouettes.

While there is nothing new about the ’70s styles it has been quite the surprise to see every city embrace the exciting mix of colors, cuts and designs. If there’s one thing the ’70s gave us, it was untested combinations of colors. Burnt orange, olive green and brown are suddenly not just colors for the fall season.

For those of us who didn’t live through those years, it was truly a time of radical change both sociologically and fashion-wise. The conservative look of the ’50s suddenly became an avant-garde appearance. Nothing like it had been seen since the Roaring ’20s and the sense of nostalgia for a flashback is apparent once again.

So how does one participate in this trend without dipping into their college fund? Since retailers have already interspersed these trends into their inventory nationally, it can be pretty easy to create a runway inspired look for much less. Urban Outfitters and Free People are the queen retailers of recreating the bohemian trends. Shop their fringed kimonos and distressed boyfriend jeans to begin your trip down memory lane. Accessorize your regularly scheduled wardrobe with fedoras, bold statement jewelry and fiery patterns to add the flavor of that decade. Drop in hints of abstract floral patterns and even tie-dye to successfully evoke the imagery even without looking like a music festival wannabes.

Lengthy chiffon dresses mixed with swirls of suede and fringe play perfectly in the ready-to-wear section. Throw on a pair of hip-hugging flared bottoms with a knitted crop top and you’ll have the style mastered this summer. Seventies fashions were truly one of the defining characteristics of an important social era, so you might as well turn on Nick at Nite and set your Instagram filters to “1977.” It’s back to the future baby.
