The Lowdown

Heading into the locker room at halftime, the ISU women’s basketball team found itself in a pretty good place. Iowa State (16-10, 7-8 Big 12) was on the road at West Virginia (16-11, 6-9 Big 12), and was holding a 36-26 lead at the break.

It was similar to the run from the team’s game against Oklahoma on Feb. 17, when the Cyclones rallied and beat the Sooners in overtime.

But once the second half hit, the Cyclones seemed to find that there was a lid on their basket. After shooting nearly 45 percent from the field to open the game, the Cyclones shot just 22.7 percent in the second half, leaving the door wide open for a Mountaineer comeback.

And that’s just what West Virginia did. The Mountaineers opened the half on a 17-6 run, bringing them right back into the game.

The two teams battled back and forth through the last 10 minutes of the game, but it wasn’t until West Virginia’s Teana Muldrow converted an and-one 3-point play with just five seconds left that sealed the deal. The Mountaineers had taken their biggest lead of the half, a lead that was enough to give them a 54-52 win over the Cyclones.

Nikki Moody once again led the Cyclones with 15 total points in the game. Seanna Johnson followed closely, finishing with 14 points and eight rebounds.

However, Moody and Johnson were the only two Cyclones to finish in double-digit figures on the day.

Up Next

The Cyclones will return to Ames at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 at Hilton Coliseum when they host Texas Tech. The last time these two teams met, Iowa State fell 71-58 on the road.
