Iowa State leaves road woes behind

The Cyclones and the Cowboys appear incapable of playing anything but hotly contested games destined to be decided in the final minutes, if not the final seconds.

No. 14 Iowa State (19-6, 9-5 Big 12) edged out No. 22 Oklahoma State (17-9, 7-7) by a score of 70-65 Feb. 18 in Stillwater, Okla.

The victory saw the Cyclones extend one streak, while putting another behind them. Iowa State has now won five straight against the Cowboys —the fifth win breaking a four-game losing skid on the road in conference play.

Iowa State’s long sought after triumph outside of Hilton also moves the Cyclones to within one game of the Big 12-leading Jayhawks with five tests remaining on the schedule.

The contest at Gallagher-Iba Arena mirrored the first matchup between the teams. In both relatively low-scoring affairs, Oklahoma State kept the ISU offense from running wild. As in the game at Hilton to open the conference season, Oklahoma State found itself with a chance to make a last second 3-pointer that might have changed its fate.

Yet, just as OSU forward Tavarius Shine failed to convert his 3-point attempt Jan. 6, forward Jeff Newberry came up short in his last-second effort as well.

Jameel McKay led the way for the Cyclones, scoring 17 points and claiming 14 rebounds on his way to posting his first career double-double in a Division 1 game. McKay added four blocks and made 13-of-18 free throws to bolster an ISU offense that failed to eclipse 40 percent shooting from the field.

Senior Dustin Hogue also played a crucial role, as he did in the first contest against Oklahoma State, boasting a stat line of 14 points and seven rebounds. Hogue also hit a 3-pointer late in the game to give the Cyclones a one-point lead they would not relinquish.

Next up for Iowa State is a matchup at Texas on Feb. 21.
